Green Buildings in Singapore

Green Building in Singapore: Marina Barrage

Opened to public on 1 November 2008, is one of the many green buildings in Singapore. It provides water supply and flood control to the Singapore River. Not only that, it has several green features. One of the notable ones is the fact that it has a double-glazed glass panels in the pumping station to reduce heat penetration and the need for air-conditioning. This saves about 1,102 MwH per year. Another feature is that the 70 kW peak DC Solar Park houses Singapore's largest collection of solar panels in operation. There are also water-efficient fixtures such as taps and waterless urinals to manage the water consumption more effectively.

Opened on November the 11th, the shopping mall that was opposite Expo MRT was built on a eco friendly mentality and design. The four story shopping mall is a frequent hub for many due to its unique green architecture and flurry of eateries and factory outlets. Its has a variety of gardens all around the shopping hub, including the landscape themed rooftop garden and my personal favorite, little 'garden tubes' in between the shops. Many of its eateries are also integrated into its garden theme with outdoor seating beside a luscious greenery, making this mall one of the local favorites with its own green touch.

Marina Barrage
The Barrage serves three benefits: It creates a freshwater lake to boost Singapore's water supply, acts as a tidal barrier to prevent flooding in low-lying city creas, and keeps the water level consistent, offering a venue for water-based activities in the heart of the city. The Barrage uses double-glazed glass panels used to reduce heat penetration and the need for air-conditioning. Another green feature of the Barrage is that they have a 70kW peake DC Solar Park that houses Singapore's largest collection of solar panels in operation. It also has automated irrigation sprinkler system on the rooftop is linked to rain sensors.

City Square Mall,

Even our shopping mall is a green building, at City Square Mall, they used integrated photovoltaics to harness solar energy. By using LED, lifts, escalators and travellators with auto-lighting and slow-down features, it saves more energy compared to other regular mall. There are intensive green roof to lower the heat gained and twin chute pneumatic waste removal system to provide fresher air. The mall also encourage others to save our earth by giving priority parking to hybrid cars that have less harmful impact on the environment, in addition it also included a real time display of indoor environmental performance, to raise awareness. By doing all this, City Square Mall saves around $2million by using less energy, thus I hope all the other many mall in Singapore can be inspired to do the same.

Green Buildings in Singapore,
Singapore’s Changi Airport, Terminal 3 which has a roof architecture that allows soft natural light into the building and at the same time, not allowing the heat to escape in. There are more than 900 skylights reflector panels which allow themselves to allow the right temperature of heat into the building. These solar panels generates energy, furthermore, it is not only sustainable, and it is also renewable meaning that we will never run out of it. Hence, due to the solar panels, it marks a as a green building. In addition, In line with Singapore’s reputation as the Garden City, Terminal 3 boasts a vertical garden five storeys high, known as the “Green Wall”. With a height of 300 metres across the main building, the “Green Wall” is a tapestry of climbing plants, interspersed with four cascading waterfalls and a hand-carved sandstone art wall display.
Therefore, with its unquie architecture and green wall, Changi Airport is mark as a green building In Singapore.

Not only is it prestigious and well known for it's services. Marina Bay Sands(MBS) hotel has achieved the "Green Mark Gold Award". Which is only awarded to those who achieve outstanding environment sustainability. The hotel's Art Science Museum is designed in a specific way that it is able to collect rainwater which can be converted to the hotel's source of water for their toilets. They also have self-closing taps and constant flow regulators to minimise water wastage. Reducing the consumption of water with a rough estimate of 350 million liters per year. With that being said, the hotel requires significantly less power for their air condition system due to it's innovative water-cooled chiller system. Heat emitted from the chiller is consumed by the building's heat pumps. Which is converted to the heated water for restaurants and showers. Thus, minimising energy consumption.

Bedok Point  is a the first mall in Bedok that is a redevelopment of both the former Bedok and Changi Theatres. It has been awarded the Green Mark Gold Award by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). The reason for this is because they have green features such airtight construction of double glazed windows, which creates thermal insulation, sound insulation, safety, limited condensation and reduced damage to furnishing; Use of energy efficient air conditioning systems, lifts and elevators, which reduces electricity costs and use; And use of water efficient fittings and green label products (Like taps, toilet bowls ,basins and urinals), which reduces the amount of water used to flush and rinse. With these energy saving products, it has an estimated energy savings: 569,697 kWh per year and estimated water savings: 36,989 m3 per year.

Singapore sports hub (Tan Dion 1504379G)

Singapore sports hub is one of the many green buildings in Singapore. However it differs from others as it not only have amazing features such as 6000 seat Indoor Aquatic center, additional sports and leisure facilities such as skate parks, rock wall and leisure pools, it also displays a beautiful array of plants and flowers that to me balances out and completes this entire attraction. Some of the green features include extensive shading from giant louvers, overhangs, and external screens for further reduction in solar gain, skylights at the retail atrium to provide natural sunlight and big scale PV systems at 500 kwp.  In my opinion having many green buildings in Singapore and being recognized as one of cleanest and greenest countries in the makes me very proud of Singapore.

Marina bay sands has just received the Green Mark Gold Award from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA). It was granted such a prestigious award as it demonstrated a combination of energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, environmental protection and green innovation. The hotel utilizes recycled products under Singapore’s Green Labelling Scheme whenever possible, such as drainage cells, timber decking, drywall partitions and fire-rated doors so as to maintain its green ideas. To conserve water, the hotels own Art Science Museum is able to collect rainwater for use in the building’s toilets and for irrigation it has more than 60,000 control points located across the building, to control the heating, lighting, air conditioning as well as water supplies. What’s more, it uses chilled water from an innovative water-cooled chiller system as a source of air conditioning. Marina Bay Sands also lends support to dozens of eco-friendly initiatives in Singapore.

The Marina Bay Sands, it is one of Singapore's Eco-friendly building. Known for its entertainment and leisure purposes, it is also known to be Singapore's largest building to be certified Eco-friendly. Before the building was even constructed, planners has already decided to incorporate 'Green' features into the design and architect into it. The hotel is covered by an extensive network of shades along with specially designed concave and convex roof to reduced the heat level of the interiors. Further more, engineers use recycled materials such as drainage cells, timber decking, drywall partitions and fire-rated doors whenever possible. In regards to water conservation, the hotel's specially designed Arts Science Museum is able to collect rainwater for use in the building's toilets and for use of irrigation. Additionally, it also have self closing taps and constant flow regulators to ensure minimal wastage, reducing the consumption around 350 million liters per year. And lastly, the air conditioning of the building uses significantly less power than other conventional system as it uses chilled water from an innovative water-cooled chilled system.

One Green Building I would like to touch on is the Parkroyal hotel in Singapore. The Parkroyal hotel consists of a few features such as the skylights, solar panels, energy-saving elevators and escalator which were built to conserve energy. The solar panels plays a part in conserving energy by absorbing solar energy and using them as power sources. This helps reduce the amount of electricity usage. Furthermore, an efficient energy saving skylight helps minimize the energy used in heating, cooling and lighting as they provide daylighting and ventilation. Lastly, the energy saving elevators has in cab sensors and softwares which provides sleep mode, turning off lights and ventilation. All these features helps reduce the energy used to move the elevators.

Tampines Concourse is one out of the many green buildings in Singapore. To reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emission, this is one of the first building project which was constructed using Green Concrete. The building also provides an eco-cool system for the office and lift lobby at 26 degrees, which saves 41,8999KWh/yr. There are a few attractions such as the Green Roof Area too. The building has also used nano-coating which is applied on waterless urinals, which saves water, cleaning agents and manpower. It also uses natural lighting in Atrium and the use of sun pipes in toilets are also integrated with photocell sensors. The last green feature of this building is that the building also uses non-chemical anti-termite treatment! Therefore, Tampines Concourse is a great example of a Green Building in Singapore as it is eco-friendly.

City Square Mall is Singapore’s first eco-mall to be integrated with an urban park named City Green which is designed to provide a learning experience about ecology and the natural environment. It is also the first mall in Singapore awarded the prestigious Green Mark Platinum Award by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). The eco-mall has many green features such as designated parking spaces for hybrid vehicles and uses high-efficiency air conditioners that produce less electricity, preventing the emission of more than 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The condensate water from the air-conditioning system is recycled, thus saving water enough to fill 2 Olympic-sized pools yearly. There are also driveway sensors to adjust the lighting of the car park at Level B4 that saves about 50,000 kWh of electricity a year.

The first of its kind, National library is the first green building to be built in Singapore. The design of the building provides a sense of arrival to the visitors as it has open sky spaces and a plaza. It gives visitors some natural ventilation. Sky bridges along every lever  allows easy travel to the opposite buildings. The building was oriented away from the east-west sun and also has sunshades , which reduces the heat gain from the sun, therefore help maintain a cool temperature in the building. Also, light shelves are these things that take in light from the outside into the building, thus saving more energy. Sky gardens are also featured on the 5th and 10th floor of the building, which provides low ambient temperature and the escalators built are motion sensor, which use less energy then normal escalators. Therefore, National Library is a great example of a green building as it is sustainable, environmentally friendly and energy efficient.

City Square mall is an example of a Green Building in Singapore. It is the first mall to be integrated with an urban park. Also known as City Green, the park is like a green carpet laid out in front of the mall to welcome visitors. City Square Mall has designated parking areas for both, hybrid and electric cars. The lights and escalators aren't a drain on power because of auto lighting and slow down features. Condensate water from the air conditioning systems is recycled and is enough to save water for 2 Olympic sized swimming pools per annum. Another interesting thing about City Square Mall is that on rainy days, sensors help to ensure that the landscaped greenery isn't watered therefore water is not wasted. More cooling coils are used in the air-conditioning systems to treat air which is to better control indoor humidity. This way, we can save the earth. Therefore, City Square Mall is an example of a Green Building in Singapore.

Lastly, rocks and stones that was collected during the construction stage were reused as building materials to cut down on carbon footprints. The above examples of the green features helps to save the earth in many ways, not only by saving resources in Singapore.

An example of a Green Buildings in Singapore is 311@Somerset. It was awarded the Green Mark Platinum in 2013 for being an environment-friendly building in Singapore.  To be part of an environment-friendly building, it had green features such as Green Lease and Tenancy collaboration. Tenant’s provisions are specified in the Green Lease and there is a control on the energy usage. Likewise, the building have a carbon offsetting car-park. This implies that a small portion of the car-parking fees will be used to fund solar panels to be built on the development. The intention is to offset the carbon of the vehicles getting to the mall. Also, solar panels are able to harness the sun’s energy to power up car-park lighting and barrier system. Thus, it reduces the energy usage in the shopping mall.
